Net profit jumps to ₹7,817 crore from a loss last year; refining margins and efficiency drive growth
Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), the country’s largest fuel supplier and refiner, has reported a powerful turnaround in its second-quarter results for FY26. After facing a tough year due to volatile global crude oil prices, IOC has bounced back with impressive profits, showing how smart management and strategic planning can deliver strong results even in uncertain times.
Profit Makes a Sharp Comeback
In the July–September quarter, IOC recorded a net profit of ₹7,817.55 crore, compared to a net loss of ₹169.58 crore in the same period last year. This marks a 4,000% jump year-on-year, highlighting the company’s remarkable recovery.
Last year’s results were hit by high crude prices and weak refining margins. This year, IOC’s improved sourcing, operational discipline, and teamwork helped it regain momentum and investor confidence.
Refining Margins Lead the Recovery
A major highlight of the results is the sharp rise in gross refining margins (GRM) — the difference between crude oil costs and product selling prices. The GRM stood at $19.6 per barrel in Q2FY26, a huge leap from $1.59 a year ago and $2.15 in the previous quarter.
For the April–September period, IOC’s average GRM was $6.32 per barrel, up from $4.08 in the same period last year. The improvement shows how efficiently IOC managed its crude sourcing and refining processes, despite the global oil market’s ups and downs.
Revenue and Operations Stay Steady
IOC’s revenue from operations rose 3.9% year-on-year to ₹2.06 trillion, while total expenses fell 2.5%, showing strong cost control. The company processed 17.6 million metric tonnes (MMT) of crude oil in the quarter, up from 16.7 MMT last year — a sign of healthy demand and higher capacity utilization.
More Than Just Financial Gains
Beyond numbers, this performance carries social and economic importance. With operating margins at 9.09%, IOC’s success supports the livelihood of over 33,000 employees, ensures uninterrupted fuel supply across India, and contributes significantly to the government’s revenues. The company’s financial health also strengthens national energy security — a key factor in India’s growth story.
Strategic Vision for the Future
IOC’s management credited the results to smart crude procurement, including new import deals with Brazil and possible imports from Venezuela. The company is also investing heavily in green energy, cleaner fuels, and digital transformation to prepare for the future. Marketing volumes rose 5% compared to last year, reflecting rising consumer demand and confidence.
Investor Confidence High
After the announcement, IOC’s shares touched a 52-week high, showing strong investor trust. While a few analysts noted that profit and EBITDA were slightly below estimates, most remained positive about IOC’s long-term prospects.
The Bigger Picture
IOC’s Q2FY26 story is not just about financial recovery — it’s about resilience, innovation, and commitment to India’s energy future. As the nation moves toward cleaner and more sustainable energy, IOC’s ability to adapt and lead will remain a key pillar of India’s economic strength.
